A 23-year-old man was shot in the chest area when he opened his door after hearing noises outside early Wednesday morning.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident that left Corey A. Gibbs Jr. wounded, but not critically.
Maj. Richard Lewis with the Sheriff's Office said Gibbs had been taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville to have the bullet removed, but was expected to be OK.
Gibbs was sitting in his living room at 103 Theo Drive just after midnight when he heard a noise at his front door, as though someone was messing with the door knob.
He got up, went to the door, opened it and was shot near his sternum.
Gibbs was able to slam and lock the door after being shot.
A report describes the suspect as a black man wearing something around his face, but not wearing a shirt.
Detectives recovered a small caliber shell casing from underneath the front steps of the house on Theo Drive.
Lewis said the agency does not yet have a motive for the shooting, but is working to develop one. He added that Gibbs has provided a statement and is cooperating.
