Police say a local man faces felony charges after it was discovered he is allegedly married to two women at the same time.

Gary Richard Joseph Phaneuf, 44, was arrested Monday and charged with felony bigamy, according to  a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.

Detective Lt. Shawn Harris said Phaneuf's first and current wife reported the second marriage ---- although it remains unclear how she made the discovery ---- to authorities on April 21.

Harris said that Phaneuf and his first wife were married in another state.

He said Phaneuf was then married again to a second woman on March 11.

"We had to investigate the case and interview them and get certified copies of the marriage certificates," Harris said. "We can't go based only on what someone tells us."

Harris also said that to his knowledge, Phaneuf did not file any divorce motions prior to his second marriage.
