Approximately 37,000 pounds of food was collected in Wayne County last week during the 23rd annual National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive -- a new record that surpassed previous collections by thousands of pounds.

Local and rural letter carriers in partnership with United Way of Wayne County conducted the local drive as part of a national effort by more than 1,300 NALC branches in the United States to fill local food banks and pantries. Last year, the local letter carriers collected approximately 15,250 pounds of non-perishable food, this year their goal was to reach 18,000.

"It was overwhelming how many people gave," said letter carrier Sheila Cash. "I think with the flooding from Hurricane Matthew, the community knew there are people who still need help."

The food will be distributed to stock seven organizations in Wayne County including The Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro, HGDC Community Crisis Center, The Salvation Army, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Make a Difference Food Pantry, United Church Ministries and Wayne Uplift Domestic Violence Shelter.
