Public health essay contest open to teen contestants

Wayne County high school students are invited to participate in the annual Charles T. Gibson Teen Public Health Leadership essay contest.

Students in grades 9-12, representing public, private and homeschools are eligible to participate in the contest, which offers scholarships as prizes.

Sponsored by the Wayne County Health Department and Board of Health, students are encouraged to write an essay about a public health topic that is an issue in this county and a possible solution to resolve it.

Topics can be one of the following areas, access to healthare, adolescent health, disease prevention, effective sex education, healthcare cost, mental health, substance abuse or environmental health.

To participate, complete an entry form, available through participating schools or online at www.wayneteens.com, or call 919-731-1235 or 919-731-1291.

Deadline for entries is May 12. Essays may be delivered to the Health Department or must be postmarked by that date.

First place prize will be a $1,000 scholarship and a $75 gift certificate. Second place receives a $500 scholarship and $50 gift certificate. Third place receives a $300 scholarship and $50 gift certificate.

Finalists will also be asked to develop a presentation of their topic, which will be given during the essay scholarship ceremony on June 13 at 7 p.m. at Wayne County Public Library.
