WCC to hold three commencement ceremonies to accomodate growing number of graduates

Wayne Community College will hold three commencement ceremonies this spring, splitting off its college credit event to accommodate the growing number of graduates.
For years the institution traditionally held ceremonies outside, with seating provided in the adjacent bleachers and the college's auditorium serving as a backup.
Moffatt Auditorium continues to work for the smaller crowd and continues to work for the ceremony for Basic Skills program -- Adult High School and High School Equivalency.
But the growing number of students receiving college diplomas and certificates has sent officials scrambling for accommodations sufficient to hold families attending to support the graduates.
Love Temple in Goldsboro was secured in 2011 to hold the curriculum ceremony.
As more graduates are choosing to participate in the ceremony, and to be fair with the distribution of tickets for guests to attend, officials made the decision this year to hold two curriculum events.
Both will take place on Thursday, May 11, at Love Temple.
The 10 a.m. ceremony will be for graduates of the Arts and Sciences and Allied Health and Public Services divisions.
The 4 p.m. ceremony will be for the Applied Technologies, Business and Computer Technologies and Public Safety divisions.
Diplomas, certificates and degrees earned in these programs will be handed out during each respective event.
The Adult High School and High School Equivalence programs commencement will take place on Friday, May 12, at 11 a.m. in Moffatt Auditorium.
Despite there being two curriculum ceremonies, several program notes will be consistent at each.
The featured speaker for both will be Adam Williams, president of the Student Government Association, who is receiving his associate in arts degree.
The George E. Wilson Excellence Teaching Award will also be presented during both ceremonies.
The change will also allow a slight change in the number of tickets issued to each student for guests to attend. Officials said they hope to give each graduate six guest tickets, up from the previous four.
