The Downtown Goldsboro Merchants Association has created a new shopping experience just in time for Mother's Day.

Sip, Shop and Stroll will take place in downtown Goldsboro tonight, from 6 to 8 p.m. Participating merchants plan to offer wine samples and gift registry forms that can be filled out as wish lists for Mother's Day.

Nine downtown businesses will participate in the event, including the Bicycle World and Outdoor Shoppe, Carolina Pine Country Store, One Thirty Red Boutique, Salon 150, Skin Therapy by Beth, The Artisan Village, The Peach Boutique, The Loft Hair Salon and Day Spa and The Village Rising.

Each business will provide a complimentary wine sample and a gift registry form that can be filled out as shoppers browse through the stores. The registry allows shoppers to write down their favorite gifts, and the completed form will be sent to a family member or significant other before Mother's Day, as possible gift ideas.

"We want to share with others, especially women and moms, all the different products and services we offer downtown," saide April Melrose, owner of the Peach Boutique and secretary of the Downtown Goldsboro Merchants Association.

Dustin Pike, DGMA co-chairman and owner of Tobacco and Hops, says this event is one of many ways the merchants hope to collaborate.

"These merchants recognized they had a similar customer base, and by having one larger event, they could leverage their shared base and even drive new customers who may not have visited one, or many, of the businesses involved," Pike said. "Plus, what's better than knowing exactly what your significant other wants for Mother's Day?"

Sip, Shop and Stroll is a free event and open to the public.

The Downtown Goldsboro Merchants Association is a collaborative group of local business owners who work to ensure the business success of the downtown area.

On Saturday, the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. is having a Spring Community Action Day. The event coincides with the worldwide observance of Earth Day.

From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., volunteers of all skill levels can help plant flowers, pick up trash and help with other spring-cleaning projects throughout the downtown area.

Volunteers can signup on the www.downtowngoldsboro.com website and meet in the John Street parking lot, at 130 N. Center St.
