A Fayetteville woman is expected to live after colliding head-on with a dump truck on N.C. 55 West on Friday evening.
State Highway Patrolman A.J. Hostinsky said 61-year-old Mercedes Harris of Fayetteville was driving east in her Jeep Grand Cherokee after 5 p.m on N.C. 55 near Dobbersville Road when she lost control and her SUV began sliding.
Hostinsky said he did not know what caused the woman to lose control.
Harris' Jeep slid until the driver's side collided with an OTC Trucking dump truck driven by 53-year-old Martinenas Warren of Dudley who was headed west toward the county line.
Hostinsky said Harris suffered injuries but was expected to live after being flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Harris was conscience and able to speak to first responders before being taken away to receive medical treatment, Hostinsky said.
Hostinsky said Martinenas was not at fault in the wreck, and that charges are pending against Harris.
The wreck shut down the highway intermittently as first responders came to and from the scene.
A helicopter landed in a field beside the scene before moving about a mile away to load Harris onto the aircraft and get her to the hospital.
Hostinsky said a small fire broke out on a patch of oil on the road behind the dump truck, but Martinenas was able to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.
Grantham and Jordan's Chapel Fire Departments responded to the scene.
