Former Goldsboro resident James Forsythe drowned Tuesday in Destin, Fla., while trying to help his teenage daughter, Madison, and her friend, who got caught in rough surf. The two girls survived.

Officials had put up double red flags earlier in the day due to dangerous conditions.

Forsythe, 49, disappeared into the water and was later found floating face down. A lifeguard pulled him to the shore, but he couldn't be saved. He was pronounced dead at the Destin emergency room.

He was the son of Pat Lawrence and Bob Forsythe of Goldsboro. He attended Meadow Lane Elementary and Greenwood Middle schools, and graduated in 1986 from Eastern Wayne High School.

Forsythe attended East Carolina University. He had worked at the local Pizza Inn.

He was currently a resident of Acworth, Ga.

An obituary will be published after Forsythe's body has been returned to Georgia and funeral arrangements have been made.
