A Wayne County Public Schools bus carrying about 30 NorWayne Middle School students ran off the road into a field this morning along NorWayne School Road. No injuries were reported and no charges are expected to be filed.

A Wayne County Public Schools bus driver ran off the road and into a field along NorWayne School Road this morning with about 30 students on board.

Nobody was injured.

The school system's Transportation Director, Robert Lee, said driver Darryl Atkins drifted off the shoulder of NorWayne School Road for reasons unknown.

Lee said after Atkins ran off the road, he kept driving into the field, believing he could turn around and exit the field.

He could not.

The bus got stuck in the mud in a field across from 1111 NorWayne School Road, slightly more than a half mile from NorWayne Middle School.

Lee said the students were picked up by another bus and taken to NorWayne Middle School.

Lee said on scene this morning he did not believe the bus was damaged, only stuck and in need of a pressure washing.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident.

First Sgt. Jerry Burton with the N.C. State Highway Patrol confirmed no charges would be filed against Atkins.
