A Tuesday evening kitchen fire displaced a family living at 907 S. Madison Ave. after the house suffered extensive smoke damage.
Assistant Goldsboro Fire Chief James Farfour said the fire started on the stove around 5:15 p.m. while a family member was cooking. It then spread to the cabinets.
"The guys were on top of it and put it out with a water fire extinguisher," Farfour said. "We had a quick knockdown of the fire itself, but the smoke was all over the house."
Farfour said on scene that the smoke spread into each room of the house, but the fire did not get into the roof or outside of the immediate area surrounding the ignition point.
Red Cross will be making arrangements for the family to stay elsewhere for at least one night because of the smoke damage the house suffered, he said.
Farfour said three people were inside the home at the time the fire broke out, and each person lives there.
The family declined to be interviewed.
Firefighters cleared smoke from the home by placing a large fan in front of the house's front door and ventilating the rooms inside the home.
Goldsboro Fire Department Engines 1 and 4 and Ladder 1 responded to the fire and each cleared the scene after around one hour.
