Goldsboro police said Friday a "good Samaritan" who happened upon a woman unresponsive in her car with her two children inside on Berkeley Boulevard Thursday turned out to be one of their own.

Retired Goldsboro police Sgt. Jeremy Sutton broke out the woman's window to check on her and her children before police arrived.

After working for the Goldsboro Police Department for 11 years, Sutton went to work for the family business, Robert Sutton Motors.

Sutton, when reached by phone Friday morning, said he was standing in the office at Robert Sutton Motors -- directly across from the Burger King on Berkeley Boulevard where the incident unfolded -- when he saw a commotion outside.

"I saw a woman pull into the Burger King and happened to look at a car that was about to pull out of the parking lot onto Berkeley Boulevard," Sutton said.

Sutton said inside that car was 26-year-old Danielle Haddock, who was unresponsive in the driver's seat of her car and had her two children in the back.

A woman in the parking lot stopped to check on Haddock and began screaming for help before calling 911.

That's when Sutton stepped in.

He ran over and saw what was happening and asked for something to break the window of the car out with.

Someone handed him a tire iron and he broke out the window to the car, he said.

Yet, Haddock remained unresponsive.

"The car was in drive but she was passed out with her foot on the brake, and I was scared if she twitched or anything like that then her foot would jump to the gas and cause the car to go forward into traffic," Sutton said.

Sutton said he then put the car in park and pulled the children out of the car right as first responders arrived on scene.

"She was very unresponsive. She just wasn't responding to anything," Sutton said. "My biggest concern was getting the children out of the car."

According to the release, Haddock received medical care and was then charged with driving while impaired and several drug related charges after police found paraphernalia, according to a news release.

Haddock, of 305 Renee Drive, is also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and child abuse. She had outstanding orders for arrest on charges of failure to appear in court on charges of  manufacture methamphetamine and two counts of  possession/distribute precursor.

She was given a $350,000 secured bond.
