In preparation for Hurricane Matthew, Wayne County Public Schools is closely monitoring the weather and staying in close communication with emergency management officials.

So far, no school closings have been announced but several decisions were made late Tuesday afternoon.

All after school programs and school-sponsored events have been canceled for Friday, with all campuses closed to the public on Saturday and Sunday. This includes scheduled athletic practices and competitions, 4-H programs, driver's ed, remediation, PTA and staff meetings, award ceremonies, plays, parent seminars and facility rentals.

Area high school Friday night football games have been rescheduled to Thursday.

School field trips planned for Friday are canceled.

District officials are staying in contact with emergency services management and any changes to storm predictions, said Ken Derksen, schools director of communication services.

"We will work to keep the public updated as any further decisions are made," he said.

"We would encourage everyone to closely monitor their local media and the district website, or follow us at @WayneCountyPS on Facebook or Twitter, for the most current district announcements."

The district has also added an app that can be downloaded to have notifications sent directly to a cellphone, Derksen said.
