A firefighter examines the scene of a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Bill Lane Boulevard and N.C. 111.
A wreck involving a tractor-trailer and a Chevrolet Cobalt at the intersection of N.C. 111 South and Bill Lane Boulevard sent two people to the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
According to eyewitness accounts from the scene, the tractor-trailer was traveling south on N.C. 111 and failed to stop at the red light and struck the Chevrolet Cobalt on the drivers side as it turned north onto N.C. 111 from Bill Lane Boulevard.
"They were taking off, and our light was green, and I saw the truck coming and he was not stopping, so I stopped, and he didn't even slow down and hit her," said Tonya Grady, a driver who was directly behind the two people inside the Chevrolet Cobalt that was struck by the tractor-trailer.
Ms. Grady called 911 to get emergency responders to the scene of the wreck.
The driver and passenger of the Chevrolet Cobalt, Katelyn Marie Schultz and Taylor Nicole Anderson, were both taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries by Wayne County EMS.
There is no word on how severely Ms. Schultz and Ms. Anderson were injured.
"They're blessed, I'll tell you that much," Ms. Grady said. "The truck didn't even slow down."
The driver of the tractor-trailer, David Lynn Edwards, was driving a tractor trailer for Purdy Bros. Trucking out of Loudon, Tenn. Edwards was charged with failing to stop at a red light. The wreck happened about 1:15 p.m. and the scene was cleared about 2:30 p.m.
