Shirley Harkey of Pikeville, vice president for patient services and chief nursing officer for Wayne Memorial Hospital, recently received a doctor of health administration degree from the Medical University of South Carolina.
Graduating with high honors, she was inducted into the Upsilon Phi Delta Society and the Alpha Eta Society for academic excellence.
Mrs. Harkey also received the school's outstanding doctoral project award. Her dissertation was entitled, "Thirty-Day Readmission Rates for Total Joint Arthroplasty in Florida Hospitals: Are Most Due to Surgical Complications or Comorbid Conditions?"
An administrator at Wayne Memorial Hospital since 2005, she was one of about 600 graduates who received degrees during recent commencement exercises and one of 19 being conferred with doctor of health administration degrees.
Hospital president and CEO, Bill Paugh, commended Mrs. Harkey for the accomplishment.
"The fact that she earner her doctorate in two years while continuing to work full-time here speaks volumes about her dedication both personally and professionally," he said. "We are fortunate to have her as a member of our leadership team."
