A Goldsboro man is in custody today charged with an open count of murder in connection with the Aug. 8 shooting death of Jerome Lavelle Barnes, 17, outside the Donel Express Mart at 508 E. Elm St.
The investigation remains open, however, as there is at least one more witness with whom Goldsboro police would like to speak.
Rashad Terrell Daniels, 22, 402 Pear St., is being held without bond in the Wayne County Detention Center and is scheduled for a first appearance in district court later today.
"We came up with some credible information and were able to locate him," Maj. Anthony Carmon said.
Investigators tracked Daniels down at the Irish Inn, 1104 Sunburst Drive, and arrested him at 9:51 p.m. Monday, according to a police report.
So far he is not speaking with detectives.
"He exercised his constitutional right not to make a statement," Carmon said.
Daniels was one of two men captured on security camera footage inside the convenience store just moments before the murder. In the still photos released to the media by the police department, Daniels is pictured wearing a white shirt and blue bandana.
The second man, who appears shirtless in the still photos, has not been identified publicly but has been interviewed by police and cleared. At least one additional witness is being sought.
"We are still continuing the investigation. We have not talked to everybody we have needed to talk to. There is one witness we are still trying to locate," Carmon said.
A separate investigation into another murder that took place Aug. 8 -- that of Tyron Kasheem Jones, 25, who died after his car was shot up in the 800 block of Argo Street before 1 a.m. -- is also continuing, Carmon said. So far no connection between the Barnes murder and the Jones killing has been established.
"Nothing credible yet," he said.
In both investigations, cooperation from the community remains crucial.
"We're getting some cooperation from the community. We've had offers of assistance from local businesses," Carmon said.
It is not uncommon for local business owners to offer to lend use of their office space, telephone lines or other resources to the police department, especially during high priority investigations, Carmon said.
"The biggest thing is that we appreciate the thought behind it. Whether we can accept it or not -- there are some things we can't accept -- we appreciate the businesses are willing to step in and help us," Carmon said.
