Hillary Keizer, right, talks to officers investigating the car break-ins and theft at Spence Townes this morning. Keizer was not a victim, but noticed a suspicious car Thursday while on a break from work.
The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating a series of motor vehicle break-ins at an apartment complex off North Spence Avenue this morning.
A red Volkswagen Beetle was also reported stolen.
"We have several occurrences of someone breaking into unsecured vehicles, also one stolen car," Sgt. Jeremy Sutton said.
The break-ins took place between late Thursday night and the early morning hours today at 702 N. Spence Ave. Most of the vehicles tampered with were parked in the back row of apartments tucked off the road.
Apartment complex residents said this type of incident is unheard of in their community.
It is usually a very quiet, nice neighborhood, Stephanie Swain said.
Ms. Swain said she has lived in the Spence Townes apartment complex since April -- and that in the short time she has been there, she has not seen any suspicious activity before.
Another resident new to the community, Na'Anna Reynolds, moved to Goldsboro two months ago. She is a servicewoman stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. She said she just transferred to North Carolina from California, finally landing an assignment that saw her stationed near her husband, who also serves in the military.
Either Thursday night or this morning, someone stole her car.
"They stole the key out of my husband's car," Mrs. Reynolds said. "They stole the key out of his car then drove off in my car."
Investigators spent the morning talking to neighbors, taking fingerprints off car doors and door handles and trying to get a tally on just how many cars were broken into.
As of press time, the total was still unknown.
Sutton said the stolen vehicle is a 2006 red Volkswagen Beetle. So far, no witnesses have come forward and no suspects have been identified.
