Eastern Wayne High School senior Cullen Tyndall has received a full ride to attend Duke University in the fall.
The Benjamin N. Duke Scholarship pays expenses for four years of study at Duke, and is valued at more than $250,000.
In addition to covering tuition, room and board and mandatory fees, B.N. Duke scholars are also afforded opportunities to participate in two summers of community engagement, one in the Carolinas and one abroad.
Tyndall, the son of Blair and Lynne Tyndall, plans to major in international studies/politics.
He was recognized during the recent school board meeting. Board Chairman Chris West presented Tyndall with a certificate for his accomplishments.
"Mr. Tyndall has proven himself to be worthy of this scholarship, both inside and outside the classroom," West said. "Mr. Tyndall has been an active member of the National Honor Society and the Math Club since 2013. He has served as an after school math tutor within the math club, assisting students as needed in the homework lab.
"He is also an active member of the school's Key Club and has held various leadership positions at the local and district level. For the past year, (he) has served as the governor of the Carolinas District of Key Club International, representing both North and South Carolina."
