Rosewood High School senior Sara Lewis has earned a Park Scholarship to attend N.C. State University in the fall.
Considered one of the most prestigious undergraduate merit scholarship programs in the nation, the scholarship program pays expenses for four years of study. It is valued at about $98,000 for North Carolina residents and $166,000 for out-of-state residents.
The scholarship covers tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, travel and personal expenses. Recipients are also given a compute stipend and receive grants to fund professional and personal enrichment experiences, such as research projects, service activities and conferences in the U.S. and abroad.
In addition to the academic component for applicants, officials also place a premium on the candidates' character, integrity and commitment to their community.
Approximately 40 of the scholarships are given out nationwide each year.
Miss Lewis is the daughter of Dr. David Lewis, assistant superintendent for accountability/information technology services and transportation, and Angie Lewis, a teacher at Rosewood Middle School.Recognized during the June school board meeting, board member Jennifer Strickland shared some of Miss Lewis' accomplishments.
"(She) has proven herself to be worthy of this scholarship, both inside and outside the classroom," Mrs. Strickland said. "During her high school career, Miss Lewis has served as president of the school's student council and DECA chapter, is a National Honor Society member and a member of the varsity cheerleading squad.
"Miss Lewis is also an active member of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church and serves as a church intern and worship leader. She has also taught Bible school and traveled to Santiago, Dominican Republic for a mission trip."
