Things are heating up at the Arts Council of Wayne County this summer.

On Friday, stop by the Arts Council for the grand opening of the Art Alley. The ribbon cutting on the "First Friday" will open the brick alley.

There will be music and live painting, where a local artist paints the event as it happens.

Alando Mitchell's drumline will perform.

The Art Alley was the work of the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation. The walls are decorated with murals, painted by community members as part of Community Action Day on April 25.

The Art Alley is part of the effort to beautify downtown.

Eventually, gallery assistant Blaine Little says they hope to move out bistro tables, so people can work outside, using the Arts Council wireless Internet.

A hopscotch outline and four square court will also be added to the alley.

It is lit at night by solar powered bulbs, strung overhead.

The art alley opening will kick off the art shows for the month. The galleries will feature Bates Toone's watercolors in the downstairs gallery. Upstairs in the TA Loving Gallery, the Teeny Tiny Art Show will feature submitted work smaller than 4 inches in any direction.

All mediums are welcome for the Teeny Tiny Art Show. There are no age requirements to enter. Entry is free.

"It's going to be very cute," Little said.

The pieces will be accepted June 1 through 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All entered art must be for sale.

On July 10, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., stop by the Art Alley for a Pop-Up Art Show. The First Friday celebration will be delayed a week because of Independence Day.

Spend the evening under the twinkling lights of the alley and enjoy the works of three local artists.

The art will only be displayed that one evening.

"It's a pop-up because it's outdoor, we can't leave it out," Little said.

The art will be hung from chains on the wall for the evening. The show will feature the work of Christy Thompson, Karin Thompson and Beth Hill. Enjoy the summer evening, live music and refreshments.
