Twenty-five local high school juniors recently graduated from the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce Junior Leadership program.
An outgrowth of the Wayne County Leadership program, the student version was introduced in 1999.
Each year, high school juniors are selected to participate and learn more about Wayne County and possible career opportunities. Programs are held throughout the school year, each on a different theme -- history and education, health care, business and industry, government and law and agribusiness.
"With over 300 graduates over the last 17 years, the Junior Leadership Program is a proven success," Chamber President Kate Daniels said. "Our goal is for the students to have an inside look into Wayne County and discover what their community has to offer."
Two students, Nolan Davis from Wayne Country Day School and Caroline Clucas from Wayne Early/Middle College High School, addressed their classmates at the recent graduation ceremony.
Davis said volunteering is about more than fulfilling required hours and more about improving the lives of others.
"This year, the class has worked closely together. We have become friends," he said. "This is important that we work well together as we will be the next leaders of Wayne County. In 20 years, you will see us working as county manager, or being the next Kate Daniels."
Kathy Jones, committee chair, called Junior Leadership Wayne an outstanding leadership program.
"It is a pleasure to work with these students because one day we hope to see them in leadership positions in our community," she said. "The opportunity to participate in this program is coveted by high school juniors and rightfully so."
