Cones stand at the ready as local law enforcement officers prepare for the weekend traffic along the routes to the Wings Over Wayne Air Show.
The major points of congestion heading into the 2015 Wings Over Wayne Air Show at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base this weekend will most likely be the access gates at North Berkeley Boulevard and East Elm Street, at South Slocumb Street and at Oak Forest Road and East Ash Street, the Goldsboro Police Department said.
The gates will open each morning at 8 and are scheduled to close at 6 p.m. Parking is free and available both on and off base.
Heavy traffic is expected from East Elm Street all the way up to New Hope Road along North Berkeley Boulevard, Capt. Dwayne Dean said.
"There will be law enforcement officers all along U.S. Highway 70 from (N.C. Highway) 111 South up to Claridge Nursery Road -- at all intersections and lights -- making sure traffic is flowing as it should be," Dean said.
No road closures are expected, but both Saturday and Sunday traffic will be rerouted from East Elm Street north on Spence Avenue from 3 p.m. on.
"For people wanting to get to the mall or north up that way, Spence is going to be your best bet," he said.
Dean said in the event that on-base parking fills up and area businesses along East Ash Street and North Berkeley Boulevard fill as well, overflow parking will be permitted at Meadow Lane Elementary and Greenwood Middle schools. The schools are located off East Ash Street just east of the North Berkeley Boulevard intersection.
"They will walk to the gate behind Meadow Lane and catch the shuttle on base to take them to the viewing area," Dean said.
He asked those folks not intending on attending the air show this weekend to avoid the area altogether.
"If you don't have to come to that side of town, please don't. There will be delays," he said.
The Goldsboro Police Department and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base ask that everyone coming to enjoy the show this weekend plan ahead.
"We ask that people have patience, be mindful of safe driving habits and be courteous to others trying to get in or get over," Dean said.
