Northeast Elementary wins Battle of the Books

The winning Elementary Battle of the Books team was Northeast Elementary School. Northeast Elementary School students won the recent Elementary Battle of the Books competition for Wayne County Public Schools.
Nearly 70 students in grades 3-5 from 12 elementary schools competed for the title.
The annual quiz bowl style competition encourages reading, with students required to read 18 books chosen by a statewide committee. The contest tests their comprehension of the books.
Members of the Northeast team included Abby Blair, Peyton Brown, Savion Edwards, Audrey Johnson, Christina Lancaster, Levi MacKay, Aaron Maeder, Riley Mesimer, Johnny Miramon-Antonio, Skylar Ratliff, Jenna Stanley and Alora Stanton. Coaches were Stacy Hersey and Jennifer Edwards.
The winning team will now advance to the regional competition, to be held April 27 at Teacher Memoria Center in Kinston.
Fremont STARS Elementary took second place. Team members included Dantzler Bonner, Smith Cooper, Meghan Fazakerly, Evan Gray, Levi Lanier, Mickey Lenzi, Dulce Luna, AnaGriffin Shaw, Kayla Taylor, Abigail Wallace and Emily Williams. Tammy Derksen, Tobie Girard and Marcia Mooring were coaches.
The Battle of the Books program is coordinated by the media center program at participating schools. Organizers said the competition is a great way to motivate students to read and be exposed to quality literature.
Other schools that participated in the contest this year were Brogden Middle, Brodgen Primary, Dillard Middle, Eastern Wayne Elementary, Greenwood Middle, Meadow Lane Elementary, Northwest Elementary Rosewood Elementary, Spring Creek Elementary and Tommy's Road Elementary.
