Winners of the Southeast Regional Science Fair from WCPS are, from left, Anna Clymer, junior chemistry; Chandler Patrick, senior physics; and Noah Hancock, junior physics.
Three Wayne County Public Schools students won first place awards in the Southeast Regional Science Fair, held last weekend at UNC-Wilmington.
A Charles B. Aycock High School student also received special recognition promoting female participation in science-related fields.
Following the districtwide science fair last month, 12 first place finishers went on to the regional event.
The three regional winners from WCPS all attend Wayne School of Engineering.
Anna Clymer, a seventh grader, won first place in junior chemistry for her project, "AQUAtitative Analysis," involving water quality testing from a different site.
Sixth-grader Noah Hancock won first place in junior physics for his project, "Paintball Gun Barrels and Accuracy," attempting to scientifically determine which types of barrel give the most accuracy.
Chandler Patrick, a ninth-grader, placed first in the senior physics category. His project, "The Physics of Cheating in Baseball," investigated the efficacy of "corking" a baseball bat."
They will now advance to the state level, competing at the science fair, to be held at Meredith College in Raleigh March 27-28.
In another category, Taylor Daniels, a junior at CBA, was presented the "Women in Science and Engineering Award" from the UNC-W chapter of the national organization, "Women in Engineering and Science," or "WiSE."
The group's mission is to promise more STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math, majors, encourage more female participation in those fields and provide mentoring support for those students.
Miss Daniels' project was to investigate the ability of different substances to denatured beef proteins.
