The Goldsboro-Wayne County Interagency Drug Task Force and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force seized 12 pounds of marijuana and a sawed off shotgun during what it called a "quick action response" to a brief investigation Monday.

Maj. Tom Effler said the marijuana was shipped from Brownsville, Texas, to two men in Mount Olive through the U.S. Postal Service.

"Brownsville is right there on the border with Mexico," Effler said.

Rudolfo Deleon Jr., 23, of Genoa Road, and Elezar Cardenas, 30, of 428 Kelly Springs Road, are charged with a single count each of trafficking marijuana by possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Cardenas faces another charge -- a single count of possession of a weapon of mass destruction -- due to drug squad officers finding a sawed-off shot gun on top of the refrigerator inside the home.

Deleon was placed in the Wayne County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond. Cardenas' bond has been set at $9,000.

The drug squad received information from the Postal Service that the package likely containing narcotics was being delivered to Cardenas' home, according to a press release issued Tuesday.

The drug squad went to the house after the package was delivered and, after obtaining consent to search the home, located the marijuana and shotgun, the press release said.

The marijuana was allegedly intended for sale on the streets of Wayne County and carried an estimated street value of $20,000.
