Angelina Bass hangs some donated clothing at the new Salvation Army Family Store and Donation Center on Royall Avenue. The second location will offer mostly clothing and housewares, but will have some furniture and electronics.
The Salvation Army will open a second store in Goldsboro on Friday.
It is located at 2805 Royall Ave. and will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
"We're doing a second store because we have identified some other ministries that need to be fulfilled in the county," Salvation Army commander Capt. Kenny Igleheart said. "This is our first step -- to generate some more funds to help see those ministries happen."
Igleheart said the Salvation Army's phone rings constantly with calls from people who need some type of help. Last year, the organization helped more than 1,300 households, but there's always more demand for help than the organization can give.
"Sometimes we have to tell them we can't help them," he said.
The Salvation Army's original store is located on Holly Street behind the organization's office building.
"But this new store is going to open up a different body of people who are going to use it," Igleheart said. "People are not going to come down on Holly Street to shop at 7 at night where they would come here. It will fulfill that niche of people who want to patronize the Salvation Army, but they can't do it in the hours they are off. Our goal is to stay open to 7 p.m. to help those who can't shop at other times.
"Plus, people are much more likely to be on Berkeley Boulevard than they are to be on William Street. We've identified those types of things."
Igleheart said the Salvation Army's advisory board met back in January and discussed some needs in the community and where the organization fits in for the next two to five years. The board decided that to meet those needs, the Salvation Army would have to generate more money.
"We thought a new store in a much more retail location would help us," he said. "In January we looked at different locations around the community on Berkeley, Spence and Ash. We felt this was the best location. Royall Avenue is the third busiest street in Goldsboro."
The new store will have men's, women's and children's clothing and shoes, appliances, housewares, electronics and a small amount of furniture. Prices range from 49 cents to $15 on most items.
Residents can help by shopping at the new store and also donating items.
"But bring us stuff you'd be willing to buy," Igleheart said. "Don't bring us stuff you were going to throw away. If you were going to throw it away, chances are I'm going to throw it away. And it costs me to throw it away. During our fiscal year 2014, we spent more than $10,000 to throw donated stuff away. How many people could I have helped with that $10,000?"
Donations will be taken in the back of the new store during operating hours. And there's a donation bin at the front of the store outside for donations at times when the store is closed.
"Our goal is to have the ability to help more residents of Wayne and Sampson counties," Igleheart said. "That's what it boils down to."
During the grand opening Friday and Saturday, prizes will be given away throughout the day both days. In the mornings, there will be free coffee and doughnuts. In the afternoons, there will be free bottled water and hot dogs.
The phone number for the new store is 919-288-1255.
