When the 335th fighter squadron flew over Seymour-Johnson Air Force Base on Friday, the formation changed. One plane split off, leaving the group. The split represented the missing or deceased pilots and represents their departure to the heavens. The missing man flyover concluded the Prisoners of War/Missing in Action memorial week.

A ceremony was held Friday at 4 p.m. to end the weeklong commemoration of those missing or hostage.

"The search continues every day," said Col. Mark Slocumb.

Slocumb and Medal of Honor recipient Joseph Marm spoke at the event to remember those lost in battle.

"Today is time to remember the faces," Marm said, honoring those who have yet to return. "The nation will do everything in our power to bring them home."

Marm spoke of his service, of the harrowing moments where there were almost some Missing in Action. He told of his commander, a brave man, who was first on the field and last off; and most importantly, would never leave an airman behind.

Slocumb thanked the troops in attendance for their service and reminded them of their creed and values.

He asked his fellow servicemen and women to renew their promise to never stop looking and never forget.

"The strength of character epitomizes the value of service before self," Slocumb said.

"To this day, families are still in pain," he said. Currently 1,641 Americans are unaccounted for in Southeast Asia.

SJAFB held a candlelight vigil and several movie showings earlier in the week in honor of POW/MIA remembrance.
