SJAFB officials break ground on med center

Seymour Johnson Air Force Base officials broke ground on a "state-of-the-art" medical facility Tuesday morning.
The new facility, which, upon its October 2016 completion, will be the biggest building on the Goldsboro installation, will replace the current medical center that was built in 1959.
4th Fighter Wing Commander Col. Mark Slocumb was among those on hand to celebrate the effort.
"This is the most significant upgrade we've had to the base in years," he said.
The $53 million facility is expected to expand the services provided on Seymour Johnson to some 37,000 people and will cut the current utility costs of $35,000 per month in half due to energy efficient construction.
To bring the current facility up to code, it would have cost approximately $25 million.
"The Air Force has been one of the most outstanding groups to work with," said Michael Tomy, vice president of Heery International, the contracting company that will complete the project. "They'll be able to get the building up to codes and standards and will be able to serve their mission here much better."
