A grief-stricken relative of the man shot and killed in the 100 block of Ervin Drive late Tuesday falls to one knee as family members come to her aid. Wayne County EMS workers wait in the background as investigators process the crime scene.
Goldsboro police do not yet have a suspect in the investigation of a shooting death outside a residence in the 100 block of Ervin Drive late Tuesday.
Doral Deangelo Best, 42, died lying in a ditch in front of his residence at 101 B Ervin Drive just after 10:30 p.m.
He had been shot at least once.
A car several yards from where the body lay sat angled toward the drive of the neighboring residence, the driver's side door open.
According to a press release issued early this morning, Goldsboro police officers were en route to a "shots fired" call in the 100 block of Ervin Drive when dispatchers upgraded the call to "subject shot."
Wayne County EMS, the Goldsboro Fire Department and police officers arrived on scene and attempted to revive Best, but could not.
He succumbed to his wounds.
A crowd gathered but remained behind the yellow crime scene tape blocking off the entrance to Ervin Drive from New Hope Road.
Many, in tears, talked to each other about what had happened, who had seen what and who might be responsible.
None spoke on the record.
The victim's girlfriend, whose identity is being withheld, had been taken from the scene to police headquarters at 204 S. Center St. to give her statement, an officer close to the investigation said.
GPD Commander of Investigations Maj. Al King said no further details would be released at this time.
"We don't want to release any more information until we get deeper into it," he said.
The rest of the night was spent collecting crime scene data and photographs.
Onlookers who took photographs of the scene with smartphones were asked by police to give their names and contact information.
Those who refused were told to leave the area.
Investigators today are continuing to collect evidence and are conducting interviews, according to the release.
