Two Wayne County Public Schools students have accepted invitations to attend the 2014 Governor's School of North Carolina session this summer.
Governor's School is the oldest statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually gifted high school students in the nation. The program, which is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in the visual/performing arts, is located on two campuses: Governor's School West, established in 1963, at Salem College in Winston-Salem, and Governor's School East, established in 1978, which is located at Meredith College in Raleigh.
Ariel Fonner, a junior at Eastern Wayne High School, will be attending the session at Meredith and studying in the area of natural science.
Southern Wayne High School junior Clay Downes will be studying natural science at Salem College.
The 2014 session will run from June 15-July 23.
The two local representatives will be among 600 academically and intellectually gifted students to participate in the Governor's School program.
