Two shot in robbery

Goldsboro police officers detain robbery and shooting suspect Demar Worrell, 34, who was slightly wounded. His alleged victim, Demetrius Kornegay, 29, received life-threatening gunshot wounds to his leg and was flown to Vidant hospital in Greenville. A second suspect is being sought by investigators.
A botched robbery in a mobile home park off South Harding Drive just before 10 p.m. Monday resulted in both the victim and one of the alleged perpetrators being shot.
Demetrius Montray Kornegay, 29, 105 B S. Harding Drive, is in serious but stable condition at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville today with a gunshot wound to leg, Goldsboro police Maj. Al King said.
Witness reports that Kornegay also suffered two gunshots to the upper right arm were not confirmed.
Demar Worrell, 34, of Greensboro, is in the Wayne County Jail under a $775,000 secured bond, recovering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, King said.
"It was a flesh wound," he said.
No weapons were recovered.
Worrell is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree kidnapping, second-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, larceny of motor vehicle and possession of marijuana with intent to sell and deliver.
Worrell and another suspect, not yet identified by police, allegedly tried to rob Kornegay outside his home, according to a press release.
The two men shot Kornegay, robbed him of his cell phone, burglarized his home and stole his girlfriend's Chrysler 300, fleeing the scene in the stolen vehicle.
Police, responding to a panic alarm from inside the residence, arrived just as the Chrysler was leaving the area.
"The officer saw the vehicle come off the side road at a high rate of speed and went after the vehicle," Maj. Mike West said.
The driver of the suspect vehicle crashed into a tree in the 700 block of South Harding Drive. Both he and Worrell tried to run, but Worrell was captured.
Officer Melvin Smith did not quite get his vehicle into park before leaping out to run down Worrell.
"The officer's vehicle slid into the back of the stolen vehicle," West said.
Back at the scene of the robbery, EMS crews and Goldsboro firefighters worked on Kornegay for several minutes before loading him into the ambulance and then for several minutes more before transporting him to Wayne Memorial Hospital.
King said Kornegay mentioned he knew the men who shot him.
"The victim indicated early on he knew the subjects involved, but the ER staff was in lifesaving mode at the time and working to get him loaded on for the flight to Greenville," King said.
King said the investigation will continue with follow-up interviews of both Kornegay and Worrell at a later date.
The neighbor who called 911 spoke about the incident as police taped off the area.
"(Kornegay) had duct tape on his hands," William Hayes said.
Hayes said he was asleep when shots roused him.
He went outside and saw Kornegay lying on the ground saying he had been shot.
"There were two of them, because as soon as the one guy got in the passenger side, the (Chrysler) 300 took off," Hayes said.
Investigators are working to identify the driver of the vehicle.
West said the Goldsboro Police Department would likely be responsible for the damages to the Chrysler caused by the police cruiser.
"First, the accident would have to be investigated, as would any accident involving a police officer," West said.
