Goldsboro police responding to a break-in in progress at 803 Leslie St. just after 2 p.m. Wednesday found two black men in the backyard of the vacant, burned out residence.
Police say both men admitted to taking scrap metal from the home.
Martez Devon Holland, 32, and Jonathan Denzel Copes, 23, both of 104 Raynor St., face charges of attempted larceny.
Each man is free on a written promise until their first court appearance in Wayne County District Court Feb. 5.
Police recovered $5 worth of scrap metal from the alleged thieves, and placed it back inside the residence, according to the police report.
Attempts to contact the victim, homeowner David Stanley Maduzia, 54, of Goldsboro, were unsuccessful, the report said.
Holland is also due in court Jan. 13 on previous charges of breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods. Copes has several traffic violation charges pending.
