One dead in Saturday evening crash

A crew works to clear the scene of a head on collision at U.S. 117 Alternate and Country Club Drive in Mount Olive.
A head-on collision Saturday evening just north of Mount Olive claimed the life of one person and injured several others.
The extent of the injuries and the names of those involved were not available prior to press time Saturday night.
According to Wayne County firefighters, the two-vehicle wreck happened at approximately 5:40 p.m. on U.S. 117 Alt. North, about a quarter of a mile south of the road's intersection with Country Club Road.
Initial reports said that three vehicles had been involved and that one had burst into flames.
However, those reports were incorrect, firefighters said.
The Dudley Fire Departments responded to the scene. Mount Olive firefighters provided traffic control. Wayne County EMS responded as well.
Numerous Highway Patrol troopers also were at the scene.
