The driver of a vehicle that struck a utility pole on Olivia Lane near Carver Drive Wednesday afternoon allegedly tried to flee the scene and then ate illegal narcotics in an attempt to avoid arrest.
According to a Goldsboro police report, Faronta Ramone Thompson, 36, was driving west on Olivia Lane when he drove off the road and struck a Duke Progress utility pole.
Witnesses said Faronta saw undercover police officers in a vehicle parked nearby as he was driving and "freaked out," the report said.
The officers were able to stop Faronta's vehicle about a block from the accident scene. He then admitted to eating the illegal drugs he was carrying so as not to be arrested, according to the report.
Faronta was arrested anyway, charged with resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer, hit and run and failure to maintain lane control. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond.
The damage to the utility pole was estimated at $1,000. Faronta's vehicle, a 2013 Kia owned by Rental Car Finance Corporation in Columbus, Ohio, incurred $3,000 in damage.
