Wayne County Public Schools bus No. 358 was involved in an early Tuesday morning traffic accident with a Mazda Protégé at the intersection of John and Elm streets. Five students were taken to the hospital for observation.

Wayne County Public Schools bus No. 358, carrying eight students to Wayne Middle High Academy, was struck by a passenger car at the intersection of East Elm Street and South John Street, just before 8 a.m. today.

No serious injuries were reported.

Five of the students were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for observation.

Alejandra Ventura-Pona, 22, of Goldsboro, was driving a Mazda Protege heading west on Elm Street and failed to stop for the red light, according to Goldsboro police officers at the scene. Her vehicle struck the side of the school bus as it crossed the intersection heading north on John Street.

The school bus driver, Charles Artis, 76, was not harmed.

Ms. Ventura-Pona was not injured and refused medical treatment, Goldsboro Fire Department Assistant Chief Frank Sasser said.

She will be cited for failure to stop at a red light, police said.
