The final pieces of the former Arts Council building at the corner of East Ash Street and Spence Avenue are coming down as an AK Grading & Demolition crew chops away sections of the steel beams Tuesday. The demolition of the building is expected to be wrapped up by Friday with the site work done by the Aug. 19 deadline. The site was purchased by the city for $500,000 in July 2011 with hotel occupancy tax money. The city had planned to renovate the building as an Air Force museum, but decided to put it up for sale after it was found the project would be too expensive for the city to complete. Earlier this year the Goldsboro City Council turned down the Little Bank's offer of $500,000 for the property in hopes of a higher offer once the buildings are gone. City Manager Scott Stevens said the City Council wants to get at least $600,000 for the property, which is appraised at $518,000 without the building or the silo.
