The Wayne County numbers are in for the Governor's Highway Safety Program Independence Day "Operation Firecracker" Campaign, which ran June 28 through July 7.
Traffic stop checkpoints and random patrols throughout the county, 94 to be exact, resulted in 25 driving while intoxicated charges, 35 criminal violations and 290 traffic violations, according to information provided by Goldsboro police.
Only 15 charges stemmed from drugs.
The Goldsboro Police Department, Wayne County Sheriff's Office and state Highway Patrol, together with the Fremont and Pikeville police departments, teamed up to make the Fourth of July weekend just a bit safer for those traveling throughout Wayne County.
In addition to enforcing traffic safety and pulling drunken drivers off the road, the checkpoints served as a dragnet of sorts -- 16 suspects with outstanding warrants were apprehended by law enforcement.
