Log truck overturns

This log truck overturned on N.C. 581 at 4:45 a.m. today near Arrington Bridge Road, spilling logs onto the roadway. The driver of the truck was unharmed but was cited by the Highway Patrol for failure to maintain lane control. Logs from the truck were thrown into oncoming traffic and struck two other vehicles, but no injuries were reported. It took more than two hours for crews from the Arrington Fire Department and state Department of Transportation to open the highway back up.
An 18-wheeler loaded down with logs overturned on N.C. 581 at 5:45 a.m. today between Arrington Bridge Road and Casey Mill Road, spilling its cargo and shutting down the highway for more than two hours.
The driver of the log truck, Miguel Angel Carias, 36, was traveling west on 581, said Trooper C. S. Granger of the state Highway Patrol.
"One tire went off the road on the right shoulder. (Carias) overcorrected, crossed the roadway and went off the embankment," Granger said.
No one was injured in the accident that left the cab of the overturned truck upside down at the bottom of an embankment on the fringes of a rain soaked cornfield.
The roof of the cab was torn completely off.
Logs were strewn on both sides and in the middle of the roadway.
At least two other vehicles became involved in the wreck when they were struck by one of the logs-turned-projectiles.
The Arrington Fire Department and workers with the state Department of Transportation blocked the highway on both sides of the wreckage and worked to clear the logs and debris from the roadway as Kelly Wrecker Service righted the overturned trailer and truck before towing it away.
Early estimates combining the value of the damaged truck, trailer, logs and the tow bill reached the $100,000 range. The driver was cited by the highway patrol for failure to maintain lane control.
