A tree branch that fell as a result of Thursday's brief wind storm caused a transformer to blow at Meadow Lane School this morning. The Goldsboro Fire Department responded, but there were no injuries or damage to the school.

An electrical transformer blew outside Meadow Lane Elementary School today just before 8:30 a.m., prompting faculty to call the fire department.

The students are already out for summer vacation, so no children were present.

Goldsboro Fire Department Assistant Chief Frank Sasser was on scene but said there was no real fire.

"The transformer outside that runs to the school shorted or blew," he said.

Witnesses said they heard a loud boom and saw sparks flying from the spot where the wires from the power pole meet the building.

Firefighters checked the school to make sure there were no areas of concern, but said they would have to wait for Duke Energy Progress to come out and examine the scene.

The power company and emergency services throughout the county and state have been busy dealing with downed power lines and blown transformers due to Thursday's severe weather, but Sasser could not be sure if the storm had a direct effect on the transformer outside the school.
