Murder suspect caught

After nine months on the run, the suspect in a September 2012 double homicide on Devereaux Street is in custody.
Angelo Mandril Burden, 39, of 1307 E. Walnut St., was located by Goldsboro Police Department investigators at the Value Place extended stay motel in Garner about 9 p.m. Thursday.
Burden, who also used the aliases Anthony Lamont Barnes and Jeremy Whitley, is currently being held without bond in the Wayne County Jail facing two open counts of murder.
He is charged in connection with the deaths of Donald Lee Mewborn, 47, and Gary Devon Buckom, 50, who were both found shot to death outside of what police said was a liquor house in the 1000 block of Devereaux Street after 10 p.m. on Sept. 7, 2012.
Burden was identified as the prime suspect within hours, and the nine-month cat-and-mouse game began.
"We would develop a lead, check each of them out. He always seemed to be one step ahead of us," said Maj. Alton King, who heads the Police Department's investigations division.
Agents from the N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement and the SBI assisted in Thursday's capture, as did the Johnston County Sheriff's Office.
The assisting agencies set up at the motel and, when the Goldsboro team arrived, the 6-foot-6-inch, 260-pound suspect was taken into custody without incident.
"This was a tremendous effort by our investigations division," King said, adding praise for other responding officers as well.
He said it felt great standing in the parking lot knowing they finally had their man in custody.
Burden is scheduled to appear in Wayne County Court today.
