More than 200 people took part in the MS Walk sponsored by the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society at Herman Park on April 20.

Walk MS, presented by Biogen Idec, is an opportunity for individuals to support the more than 14,400 individuals who are living with multiple sclerosis in the greater Carolinas area.

Walk MS: Goldsboro has raised over $29,000 so far, with an overall goal of $30,000. Including 12 other walks in the greater Carolinas area, the total goal is to raise $1.26 million by the fundraising deadline, June 21. These dollars raised support life-changing programs and cutting-edge research for those living with multiple sclerosis.

"The turnout of supporters was fantastic," said Jeff Furst, president of the Greater Carolinas Chapter. "We appreciate the efforts of everyone who worked so hard to make this event a success, and we look forward to seeing continued fundraising efforts push us closer to our goal."

Sixty percent of all the funds raised will go toward programs, services and advocacy for people living with MS in the greater Carolinas, and 40 percent supports national research to find the cause and cure of MS.

In addition to the 3-mile walk route, participants enjoyed line dancing and the chalk message area at the finish line where participants could write messages about why they walk.

"The Society's services are needed now more than ever, and it's inspiring to see the community come together to bring help and hope to those living with MS," Furst said. "However, the hard work is not over yet. We encourage everyone to make their donation by June 21."
