Greenwood students volunteer time

A group of middle school students is being groomed as a service organization.
Greenwood Ambassadors was actually created four years ago, said Tammy Munoz, counselor at Greenwood Middle School for the past two years.
"It started out just being a club that the counselor chose, that the teachers chose, based on character, their grades and so forth. When I came here last year, there were only six of them (in the group)."
At year's end, though, she solicited nominations and suggestions from teachers for additional candidates.
With that, she moved to take it a step further.
"We have decided we want to branch out instead of just passing out programs here at school or being greeters," she said. "We want to do more service-oriented projects."
Recently, the group went to Greenwood's feeder school, Meadow Lane Elementary School, reading to younger students and engaging them in a Thanksgiving craft.
But the effort isn't going to stop there. There are more projects in store.
"We're hoping to go to the Soup Kitchen in February and to an assisted living place in March or April," she said.
