For the first time since Reconstruction the Wayne County Board of Commissioners will have a majority of Republicans.
Victories by Joe Daughtery, Wayne Aycock, Bill Pate, Ray Mayo and Steve Keen will give the new board of commissioners a 5-2 advantage. The last time the GOP held sway in Wayne was shortly after the Civil War, when North Carolina's government was being rebuilt following the great conflict.
The Republican charge to the front began in 1992 with the election of Andy Anderson as the first Republican commissioner since the 19th century.
