Arrest made in death of 21-year-old

A suspect in the shooting that killed a 21-year-old man in his car late Sunday night was arrested Wednesday.
Shawtanna Lemarus Thompson, 23, of South Slocumb Street, was taken into custody by Goldsboro police and charged with one open count of murder at 5:25 p.m.
Thompson is charged in the death of Darrel Maurice Best, who was killed while riding in a car in the 1000 block of South Slocumb Street shortly after 10 p.m.
A bullet entered the 2000 Chevrolet Impala in which he was a passenger and struck him. Shrapnel from the bullet's impact struck the driver, Brandon Maurice Turner, 18, of South Taylor Street, and sent him to the hospital.
Turner was later treated and released.
Since 2004, Thompson has been convicted of assault inflicting serious injury, multiple possessions with intent to sell/deliver controlled substances, assault on a female and trespassing.
Thompson was taken into custody in the 200 block of Johnson Lane.
At the time of his arrest, he also was facing a warrant for an outstanding felony probation violation.
