Annual sickle cell fundraiser canceled

The annual Sickle Cell Anemia fundraiser planned for Saturday at Berkeley Mall has been canceled, according to the Epicurean Civic Club, which sponsors the event.
It had been scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., featuring singers, dancers and other entertainment. But the threat of bad weather from Hurricane Irene has led organizers to cancel the event.
The club annual drive to raise money to fight the disease will continue through Sept. 30 and residents are encouraged to still donate to the cause.
Checks should be made payable to the Sickle Cell Association and mailed to the Epicurean Civic Club, P.O. Box 1882, Goldsboro 27533. All money collected will be used in Wayne County. For more information on how to contribute, call 734-6120.
