This Old House: Free from city of Goldsboro

This house at 408 S. John St. has been donated by the city of Goldsboro to This Old House, a home improvement and remodeling magazine. The magazine has asked the city to donate one of its historical homes to be used in a promotional contest.
Following the public hearing concerning the city's grant applications for two downtown projects, Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. Director Julie Thompson presented the City Council with another downtown opportunity during its special meeting Tuesday.
This Old House, a home improvement and remodeling magazine, has asked the city to donate one of its historical homes to be used in a promotional contest. The property would be featured in the magazine imploring readers to "Save This House."
After applications to preserve the house are solicited, the magazine will select a reader to donate the house to, with the understanding that the house is to be renovated.
The council voted 5-0 to donate the Nettie B. Taylor House at 408 S. John St. to the program. Ms. Thompson said the city had spent a little more than $8,000 on the purchase and stabilization of the house.
Ms. Thompson said that the magazine became interested in Goldsboro after the magazine featured one of its houses in 2008. She said each time the city is mentioned in the publication, there is a wave of new homebuyers eager to look through Goldsboro's historical houses.
District 2 Councilman Bob Waller and District 4 Councilman Rev. Charles Williams were not present for the meeting.
