An overturned Grand Jeep Cherokee lies on Ash Street after being struck by a hit and run driver at what officers are saying was a high rate of speed Monday evening. Ash Street was closed for close to an hour to clear the crash.

Authorities are searching for a suspect in a hit-and-run traffic accident at the corner of Ash and Kornegay streets Monday evening that overturned an SUV and sent a teenager and a 10-month-old child to the hospital.

The suspect was driving a rented passenger car, the property of A&A Auto Rental on North William Street. He fled the scene on foot. Witnesses described him only as a black man.

Jalissa Buie, 17, of Smithfield, and the child, the only passengers in the 1999 Jeep that was struck, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Ms. Buie's vehicle was traveling west on Ash Street when the car, which was traveling south on North Kornegay Street, ran a stop sign, according to witnesses, and hit the side of the Jeep.

A witness told Goldsboro police that he followed the suspect from the scene of the accident and saw him park the car at an apartment complex in the 400 block of North Kornegay Street. The witness told police that after parking the car, the man continued to run away on foot.

A woman who was identified as having rented the vehicle told police she had planned to report the vehicle as stolen, but had not done so.
