Neighborhood shooting ends in drug arrests

Three people were charged by Goldsboro police Monday following a shooting on the 1700 block of Maple Street about 3:30 p.m.
Police responded to a shooting call and found Joel Devon Artis standing next to his car. Artis, 35, of LaGrange, was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Also charged were Eric Jemel Henry, 27, of Cadell Lane and Demoris Sinclair Thompson, 19, of Day Circle. Both were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and carrying a concealed weapon.
Artis and Henry were jailed under $10,000 bond. Thompson, who already had outstanding warrants against him, was held under $15,000 bond.
The victim of the shooting was Isiah Young, 21, of Isler Street. Police said he was shot in the hand by Artis.
Young was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated before being transferred to Duke Medical Center. He also has warrants against him for intent to sell and deliver marijuana, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and second-degree trespass.
Artis suffered minor injuries and was treated and released.
Investigators said Artis fired his weapon while trying to protect himself from being robbed.
Young, Henry and Thompson were found by police in a car at the corner of Jefferson and Ash streets, where they were taken into custody.
A search of the vehicle revealed about two pounds of marijuana and two handguns, one of which belonged to Artis and had been used in the shooting moments earlier, investigators said.
