A 36-year-old Dudley man has been charged with kidnapping and raping a woman after she stopped to give him a ride early Monday off Bill Lane Boulevard.
Bobby Ray Grady is being held in the Wayne County Jail under $500,000 secured bond.
The assault happened when the victim, whom investigators say is 29 years old, stopped to assist Grady, whose car was stopped in the road with its flashers on.
The woman came upon the disabled vehicle around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of N.C. 111 South and Bill Lane Boulevard.
The victim was returning home from work. When she stopped to offer help, the man beside the car told her that he needed help moving it out of the roadway. He was alone.
The two of them moved the car from the road, then the woman offered Grady, who lives on Stanley Chapel Church Road, a ride.
Once inside the car, Grady allegedly pulled out a knife and ordered her to drive off, then pull onto a rural road.
The rape occurred in the woman's vehicle, investigators said. She contacted the sheriff's office shortly after 3 a.m. Grady had left his vehicle beside the road and officers were able to use it to locate him.
Grady was arrested about 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Authorities said Grady has spent time in prison on other charges.
