Teacher's assistant hospitalized after crash near school

Firefighters from El-Roy and EMS station 11 respond to a vehicle crash involving two vehicles in front of Spring Creek Elementary School around 4 p.m. Thursday.
A first-grade teacher's assistant at Spring Creek Elementary School was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital on Thursday afternoon after she was involved in an accident near the school.
The two-vehicle collision happened when a car driven by Monica Bourdon, 22, was involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer truck on St. John's Church Road in front of the school.
The state Highway Patrol reportedly received the call at 3:26 p.m. The school was to hold an open house a few hours later.
Ms. Bourdon, of Goldsboro, remained hospitalized today, principal Charles Ivey said this morning.
"She has several broken ribs and some internal injuries, but she's much better off than we originally anticipated, no head trauma," Ivey said. "She was truly blessed."
According to the Highway Patrol, Ms. Bourdon was charged with failure to yield.
Truck driver James Ivey, 54, who was traveling east and attempting to pass another vehicle, was charged with having improper classification of driver's license.
