Area cats and dogs gave the Save the Animals Telethon two paws up Saturday night.

The event raised more than $2,100 that will go towards the Animal Adoption & Education Center.

"It raises awareness about what the animal center provides, which is to take in strays, adopt out animals, investigate abuse and neglect and education," said Jean Hollowell, Wayne County Humane Society board member.

Geoff Hulse, who one day took blankets to the animal shelter and left with a new dog, said adopting a pet can be tremendously rewarding.

"You can just almost see it in her eyes how much she appreciates being in a family," he said. "Just the look in her eyes 'I love you' and 'Thank you.' It's not the animal's fault they were put in that predicament."

The live telecast was put on by PACC-10 TV and featured dog obedience training, therapy dogs, military rescue stories, reading with Rover, disaster planning and happy animal adoption tales. People can still donate by mailing a check to: Wayne County Humane Society, P.O. Box 821, Goldsboro, NC, 27533.
